Arthur George Broughton, Jr.
January 19, 1945 ~ May 13, 2026
On May 13, 2026, we lost our husband, father, and brother Arthur George Broughton Jr. He died peacefully in Lake Worth, Florida, in the presence of his wife Paula, his son Obadiah and his dear friend David Smith. Art was a writer, an intellectual with a social conscience, as were his parents before him. He was a voracious reader, a Silicon Valley “Ad Man” musician, baseball/softball player, golfer, and prolific storyteller. Art was deliberate and succinct with his words, and eloquent when he spoke. He commanded respect without demanding it.
Art was born on January 19, 1945, in Madison, Wisconsin, and grew up in southern Wisconsin. He lived briefly in Tennessee and Arizona, before his family settled in Maryland when he was twelve years old. He attended Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, Maryland. He had fond memories of his childhood on the Broughton Family Farm and summers spent in Wisconsin. He served in the Air Force from 1963 to 1967 after which he moved to California. He attended Santa Monica City College and transferred to and graduated from San Francisco State University with a degree in English. He remained in the San Francisco Bay Area and coastal community of Moss Beach.
He retired to Lake Worth Beach, Florida where he made many friends. He spent his last two and a half years in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he formed a deep connection to members of the local Pueblo communities. In his retirement, Art was an advocate to environmental and social justice causes.
Art was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur George Broughton Sr. and Julia Broughton (Williams); and his son, John Broughton.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Paula Broughton (Pellegrino); her son Riel and their son Kevin Tenaglia and grandchildren Joey and Caty; his former wife Marcia Cloutier and their son Obadiah Broughton and his spouse Amy, and grandchildren Calvin and Silas; his former spouse Karen Summey and their son Aaron Broughton and his spouse Andrea, and grandchildren Vera and Violet; and their daughter Cecily Amador (Broughton), her spouse Trini IV, and grandchildren Trini V and Jace. His beloved brother William Broughton and his son Cody Broughton. His beloved sister Elizabeth (Betsy) Broughton and her son Christopher Bossong-Broughton.
Art is remembered for his quiet strength and warmth, his storytelling, wit, and his love of life and the genuine connections he made. His presence will be greatly missed. A Celebration of Life will be announced when final arrangements have been made.
