Charles R. Dawkins

Charles R. Dawkins

April 05, 1934 ~ March 17, 2016

DAWKINS, Charles R. Charlie

Charlie Dawkins of Hamilton, NY passed away peacefully on March 17, 2016 at his winter home in Lake Worth, Florida with his loving Bride, Cathy Rasmussen at his side. Charlie was proud to have been a United States Marine and of his service of 34 years in the New York State Police (1957 1991). Sergeant Dawkins was a fixture at the Main Gate at the New York State Fair for a major portion of those years and was the annual ticket for free parking and admission for thousands of friends. He was also known for his humor and joke telling at almost every State Police and social function that he attended. He was an avid golfer and member of the Seven Oaks Golf Club at Colgate University in Hamilton, NY where he was one of the founding members, over 40 years ago, of The Clowns golfing group. Charlie enjoyed his 81 years of life from growing up as a boy in Brooklyn, NY, his adventures in the New York State Police, but none more than his retirement years on the West Hill farm, feeding his leased chickens and collecting the eggs, then spending the afternoon (after his nap), sitting in the front porch rocking chair looking over the valley admiring the herd of Red Angus, the girls as he called them. Charlie was a huge sports fan, loving and staying true to his NY teams, the Yankees, the Giants and Syracuse University basketball.

He is survived by his Bride, Cathy Rasmussen, Hamilton, NY two daughters, Carol Dubach, Morrisville, NY, Tina Carpenter, Mineola, Iowa, his sons Richard Dawkins, Dallas, TX, and Jeffrey Dawkins, Oneida NY and a very special person in his life, Larry Rasmussen, Hamilton, NY. He is also survived by a brother, Bob Dawkins, Leeds, MA and seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held later in the spring for special friends and family. Contributions in his memory can be made to: The New York State Trooper Foundation, Attn: Grave Marker Program , 3 Airport Park Boulevard, Latham, New York 12110-1441.
