Dr. Edward Oscar Pfrang

Dr. Edward Oscar Pfrang, 96, of Jupiter, Florida, passed away on July 2, 2026, with his life partner, Doris Klimeric, by his side. He leaves behind a legacy of scholarship, public service, and devotion to his profession and to his family.

Edward was born on August 9, 1929, in New Haven, Connecticut, the son of Luitpold and Anna (Wolfle) Pfrang, who immigrated from Germany and settled in Connecticut. It was there that Edward was raised and where his lifelong love of learning and disciplined work ethic first took root. He carried the values instilled by his parents’ journey — hard work, humility, and a deep respect for education — throughout every chapter of his life.

He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Connecticut in 1951 and a masters degree in engineering from Yale University in 1952. He then served with the United States Navy from 1953 to 1956, serving his country with pride and distinction. Following his naval service, he pursued and earned his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois in 1961, laying the foundation for a distinguished career in engineering and academia.

Dr. Pfrang went on to teach at the University of Nevada, Reno, and later at the University of Delaware, shaping the minds of countless students over the course of his teaching career. He then joined the National Bureau of Standards (now known as the National Institute of Standards and Technology) in Washington, D.C., in 1966, rising to chief of the Structures and Materials Safety Division. In that role, he led the federal investigation into the 1981 Hyatt Regency walkway collapse in Kansas City, Missouri, one of the deadliest structural failures in American history. His team’s findings, which traced the collapse to an unreviewed design change, drew national attention and reshaped engineering practice across the country, prompting lasting reforms in structural design review, quality control, and engineering ethics that are still taught today. In 1983, Dr. Pfrang became Executive Director of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) in New York City, a position he held for more than a decade, capping a career defined by leadership and service to the engineering profession. In 1995, ASCE honored him with its Presidents-Emeriti Council Award in recognition of his contributions to the Society.

Outside of his professional accomplishments, Edward was an avid skier and lover of the great outdoors, and he cherished the canoeing and camping trips he took with his children over the years. He also had a passion for travel, journeying extensively all over the world throughout his life. Though he was an only child, he was close to his seven cousins, who were like brothers to him and who all predeceased him. He had a great love of German marching music and all food, a nod to his heritage. When he married Jacquelyn, he was welcomed into her large, loving Italian family, who embraced him and his parents wholeheartedly.

Edward was predeceased by his beloved wife of more than 50 years, Jacquelyn (Montefalco) Pfrang, who passed away in 2010. He later found companionship and love with his life partner, Doris Klimeric, who was a devoted presence by his side for the remainder of his life.

He was a loving father to his children, Lori Allen, Leslie Pfrang (Wayne), and Phillip Pfrang(Teri), and a cherished grandfather to Justin, Bryce (Brooke), and Anna Allen; Max, Chase, and Taylor Pfrang; and Zach and Logan Tucker. A great grandfather to Weston, John Emmett and Presley Allen.

Dr. Pfrang will be remembered for his intellect, his dedication to his students and profession, and his unwavering love for his family. His contributions to engineering and public standards leave a lasting legacy, and his memory will be cherished by all who knew him.
