Gary L. Cox

Gary L. Cox

January 30, 1939 ~ April 19, 2021

Gary L. Cox, age 82, of Columbia City, IN passed away on April 19th, 2021, peacefully and surrounded by his family. Gary was born January 30,1939 to Percy and Pearl Cox of Alma, MI. He is pre-deceased by his parents and sister Carrol Cox Aumaugher.

A loving and devoted husband, father, brother and grandfather, Gary is survived by his wife Gayla of 60 years, his halfsister Laura VanSickle of Perrenton, MI, his son Ron Cox (Pauline) of Roanoke, Indiana and his daughter Cindy Cox (Myra) of Jupiter FL. Gary’s five Grandchildren Anne, Steven (Renae) and Anthony Cox and Kaylee and Jack Wahl-Cox were the lights of his life. He especially enjoyed following all their school and sport activities. Gary was also blessed with two great grandchildren, Bella and James. Gary was a compassionate person with a love for the outdoors. He enjoyed fishing, boating, and campfires with friends. He would often be found feeding the birds, deer or any animal that came across his property. A perfect day for Gary would be sitting with his wife Gayla or other family members and listening to a thunderstorm. After retirement, he enjoyed traveling and collecting art and antiques.

Gary loved his family and always put them first. An avid and stellar football and baseball player, Gary set aside his personal ambitions to care for his ill mother after graduation from Alma High School. This personal sacrifice exemplifies how Gary lived his life. He always ensured that those he loved were taken care of and that they felt his love and support throughout their lives. He has passed along his values, moral character and realization that enjoying the simple things in life is what leads to happiness. For this, his family will always be grateful.

Gary graduated from Alma High School in 1957 and attended Alma College and Western Michigan University. Gary spent his professional career with various financial institutions in Fort Wayne, Indiana and St.Louis, MO.

The family will host a Celebration of Life for Gary and welcome all family and friends. Details as follows:

Gayla. I just found out Gary passed away. I am so sorry that I didn’t know about it. He meant a lot to us because of my brother. He was always by our side when Rich went in for his heart surgery. He will
be greatly missed. Keeping you in our prayers.
