George Edgar Baker

George Edgar Baker

March 10, 1927 ~ May 20, 2023

George Edgar Baker, age 96, died at home in West Palm Beach on May 20, 2023, completing a life of commitment to the Lord, his family and his country.
George was born in Jacksonville, Florida and graduated from Landon High School. At 17, he entered the US Navy and served in World War II. He was quick to say that the Navy made a man out of the boy. Always having a resourceful mechanic’s mind, George was trusted to maintain the commander’s watercraft, as well as various personnel landing craft.
His creative mechanical skills served him well in civilian life after the War and eventually he opened George Baker Automotive Service where he thrived as master mechanic and loving friend to all who entered. He was known for customizing what he called a Fordillac, a powerful street car capable of feats of racing wonder. He loved and excelled at Florida’s Snook fishing in local inlets and spillways. He dreamed of flying and owned several private aircraft, of which his favorite was a Mooney.
George did everything according to a deep, abiding faith in Jesus Christ. He exuded love and respect for all.
A loving and devoted son, husband, father, grandfather and brother, George was preceded in death by his wife Dorris Ada who died after 60 years of marriage in 2008, wife Mary Sue who died after 11 years of marriage in 2020, and daughter Rebecca Solano who died in 2006. Also preceding him in death were siblings Evelyn Moon of Middleburg, FL, Larry E Baker Jr of Jacksonville, FL, Esther Sutton of Lawrenceville, GA, and Harold Baker of Brandon, FL. He is survived by his children Gordon Baker, Marilyn Williams and husband Jim, and Larry Baker, all of West Palm Beach, and Sherry Herrington and husband Ron, of Grand Haven, MI, and Lori De Grazia and husband Ken, of Vero Beach. Grandchildren Derek, Erin, Jeff, Brooke, Kristen, Kaylyn, Chris, Greg, Keri, and Daniel and great grandchildren Elle, Blythe, Jaxson, Reid, Grant, Colson, Hunter, McCoy, Finnick, Jace, Claire, Noah, Zoey, and Archie.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Christ Fellowship South Campus, 5312 Northlake Blvd, Palm Beach Gardens, on Thursday, June 15, 2023 at 2:00 pm. Miss my brother and friend, George. A faithful prayer partner and encouragement every time we visited together or chatted on the phone.
Singing along with him while he played his harmonica will be a cherished memory.

Uncle George, you were one of the sweetest people I ever met. You were so caring and generous to help my dad when he had car issues. You were always smiling and loving. I looked forward to your sweet hugs when the family got together. You found my first car for me for $148.00 my dad said it ran like a sewing machine. It lasted through my college years and then went to another family member. The last time we spoke you told me how much Jesus meant to you and made sure I had Him in my heart. I know I will see you when God takes me to heaven. You will be sorely missed.

Oh, my dear Daddy, how I wish you could hear and read the heartfelt comments as people you knew and loved hear of your passing! We will hug and hold again, but next time in heaven. Count on that, my precious father! You were a good, good father. It was my honor to care for you these last years. God has blessed me with this wonderful great grand father. He was always a loving person to feeding ducks everyday to loving anyone who stepped foot into his apartment. God always has a plan for everyone. My great grandfather lived a long happy life. He is in a better place with God

George Baker was one of the finest men that I have ever known. I came to know him and his lovely wife Sue when they resided at their villa at Florida Baptist Retirement Center. I can’t recall exactly how it came to be that our paths crossed, but I do know that the Lord blessed me when He chose to have our paths cross. I remember walking in to their home as their nurse and leaving there as their friend. I had such respect for George, this tall, towering man with such a husky laugh and big presence had such a gentle way and loving spirit in caring for Sue and he never looked at his caregiving as a chore but rather as a blessing from our Lord-I recall hearing his prayers of thanks to God for giving him the strength and ability to provide her care, a true statement of his character.
When I think of George, I think of how proud our Lord must be of him, he was such a devoted, loving servant of the Lord, he never failed to share the word of the Lord with everyone he knew and even with those that he didn’t know-I often heard him sharing the Word with telemarketers, people who had dialed the wrong number, people calling about his Medicare insurance, Fed-Ex drivers —he never met a stranger and he never missed an opportunity to share the Word
A life well lived, an example to follow ,a blessing to know, and a privilege to call friend

I loved uncle George very very much. I know that my mother Evelyn Moon adored him and my father, Lamar Moon loved him very much. I’m sure you are happy to be with your family in Heaven. I’ll see you again! My special thoughts and prayers go out to all the family.

I only met George a few times, but he was such an inspiration. When he smiled and spoke in his caring soft tone, you knew he was deeply interested in whoever he was speaking to. It was obvious that his life was guided by Christ and I sensed it the few times I was fortunate enough to spend time with him. It was not only what he said, but the joy behind his eyes of a life well lived and strong in his faith. He left an impression on me and I’m sure everyone he met. I know he will be missed greatly by his children and grandchildren, but I know he is very happy where he is!

Dear George- how we loved him!
His love for His Savior was a light that shone into the lives of all who were honored to know him.
A godly young man even when we were first acquainted – and his sweet
spirit & demeanor were his signature for the 70 plus years of our friendship in Christ.
