Iris Chmura

Iris Chmura

September 10, 1947 ~ November 14, 2021

Iris (Jeanne) Chmura peacefully went to be with God on Sunday, November 14, 2021.

Iris was born in Oneida, New York, on September 10, 1947, to Fred and Iris Chmura.  She grew up on their “gentleman’s” farm in Verona where she loved the woods, hill, orchards, and room to roam.  After graduating from Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Central School in 1965, Iris (Jeanne) went to Central City Business Institute and earned a degree as a medical secretary.  She pursued this career until her children, Jay and Susan, changed her focus to being a full-time homemaker and good mother.

Later, Iris took a job she enjoyed with Madison County as a Pistol Permit Clerk.  She became active in singles groups in Utica and Syracuse where she relished learning to line dance and ballroom dance.  Iris also liked traveling throughout the U.S. with family and friends.

In 2010, Jeanne retired from Madison County and headed for West Palm Beach, FL where she had many friends in her senior apartment buildings and often could be found heading up a game of cards or two in the community room there.   She loved the weather in Florida and enjoyed taking rides just to watch the nearby ocean.   Jeanne was a member of the First Christian Church Disciples of Christ church and readily shared her strong faith with many of her friends and church family.  Throughout her life, Iris worked at being the best mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and true friend. Anyone who knew her was blessed by her smile, upbeat attitude, and kind spirit.

Iris is predeceased by her parents.  She is survived by her son, James (Jay) Moffitt of Verona, NY, and her daughter Susan Cosimeno of Spearman, TX.  She was so proud of her three granddaughters:  Amanda Howlett, Cassandra Moffitt, and Cassidy Vogt-Romano; and so delighted with her four great grandchildren, Kairi Robbins, Dominic (Nicky) Moffitt, Gryffin Szkotak, and Shyla Vogt-Romano.  Iris is also survived by her brother, Max Chmura, of Jackson Beach, FL and sister, Loraine Kotary, of Baldwinsville, NY.
